E-Verify Requirements of Authorization to Work in the U.S.
If you are an employer who contracts or subcontracts with the federal governemnt, you are required to use E-Verify to check new employees’ eligibility to work and the validity of their Social Security numbers beginning September 8, 2009. Some states (not Washington) also require E-Verify. For other employers, the E-Verify program is voluntary. It is also free. For more information, see www.uscis.gov/e-verify.
Concerns have been raised regarding how accurate E-Verify will be as it ramped up to deal with the influx of employers who have not used it in the past. Only time will tell.
